Hiking the Mecklenburg Lake District and Baltic coast – winter in the North

Snowflakes dancing over lakes, red-golden sunsets, crystal-clear air, jagged cliffs and the continuous lapping of the waves – the nature between the Mecklenburg Lake District and the endless beaches of the Baltic Sea can be both peaceful and powerful in winter. On clear days it is especially nice to explore the nature here under the winter sun. You walk along natural paths, passing rivers, lakes, and white beaches. If you venture out in blustery weather, you can experience the roaring waves below the chalk cliffs of Rügen, feel the wind on your cheeks and see the crooked pine trees on the beach which have been shaped by the weather over the centuries. On the high coastal path on the Isle of Rügen, you reach a magnificent UNESCO World Natural Heritage Site with ancient beech trees which is a great place for hiking in winter in any weather. On a clear day, you can look out over the Baltic Sea for miles and when the wind roars, the waves crash against the rocky shore far below you.

The lighthouse trail takes you around the Fischland-Darß-Zingst peninsula, over its winding wooden footbridges, and through its unique dune landscapes. In the Warnow-Durchbruchtal valley, you encounter the only white-water river in northern Germany along with its narrow valley sections and rushing water. Fallada's Fridolin hike is magical too. You follow in the footsteps of the cheeky badger, explore the emerald-coloured Luzin and take a trip on one of the last cable ferries in northern Germany.

The sun-drenched island of Usedom offers two adventurous walks. You won’t find the same combination of white sandy beaches, glitzy spa villas, quaint reed bays, and rustic fishing villages anywhere else.
