Traders, robbers and conquerors – this is how the Vikings who lived on the Baltic Sea fjord Schlei from the 8th to the 11th century are often described. They once traded here, travelling to conquer new lands and treasures.
The Viking trading settlement of Haithabu on the Schleswiger Landenge in the far north of Germany was an important trading post for the Vikings and served as a central transportation hub in northern Europe. Located at the narrowest point between the North Sea and the Baltic Sea, it was both a border post between Scandinavia and the European mainland and a key trading point for the two regions to exchange goods.
Naturally, such an important and thriving trade hub aroused the interest of tradesmen and conquerors and had to be protected from enemies from the south with a massive fortification. The rulers of later centuries also recognised the value of this powerful fortification and continued to expand it until the beginning of the 20th century. The 30-kilometre (18.6 mi) rampart is called Danewerk and, together with Haithabu, is a part of Schleswig-Holstein’s third UNESCO World Heritage Site along with Lübeck's Old Town and the Wadden Sea of the North Sea.
In this Collection, we present two bike Tours that reveal this World Heritage Site, opening a window into the past and revealing fascinating history. Both Tours are about 55 kilometres (34 mi) and are perfect for families.
On the Thyratörn route, we guide you through the impressive Danewerk, the landing places of the boats from the North Sea and the Baltic Sea and the Haithabu Viking settlement. On the Eriktörn route, you sail around the western part of the Baltic Sea fjord Schlei, which was one of the most important lifelines and trade routes for the Vikings.
The way history and nature come together here also makes this region, which was once the largest early medieval trading centre in North Europe, truly special. Two wonderful cycling Tours through history and magnificent landscapes await.
The Vikings shaped the history of Northern Europe for around 200 years. The Ostseefjord Schlei was one of the most important lifelines of this time. This beautiful, about 55 kilometers long bike tour leads you in the footsteps of the Vikings, through an enchanting natural landscape, past idyllic villages…
