A weekend through the Cuxland on the Alte Postweg cycling path

Where marsh and geest meet, the Alte Postweg meanders along the "Hoher Lieth" mountain range through enchanting moors, stunning forests and picturesque wide meadows. On the historical tracks of royal post riders, you'll follow the varied cycle path through the Cuxland to the south.

The Alte Postweg was used in the 18th century by post riders traveling on behalf of the Electors of Hanover. At that time, the princes of the region were in a personal union with the kings of England and therefore lived in London. Therefore, official mail had to go along way, working its way to Cuxhaven before a boat would take it on to England. Today's cycle path follows almost the entire route through northern Germany. Along the route, you will always find information boards informing you about the history of the trail and the nearby sights.

The 50-mile long (80 kilometers) "Alter Postweg" cycle path starts in Cuxhaven and takes you in two stages via Bremerhaven to Heine, where it ends. Getting to the starting point is possible on the train, and the first stage destination — Bremerhaven — is also connected to the public transport network should you only want to do the first stage. As you go, you'll find good accommodation options available in all price brackets. At the end of the cycle path in Heine, you can either stay overnight in the hotel or cycle to the train station in Oldenbüttel, which is about 10 miles (16 kilometers) away. The cycle paths on the Alte Postweg are not all asphalted. Sometimes, you'll cycle along narrow paths, which are still good to ride on in dry weather. These sections take you straight back to the time of the post riders with their original charm — a truly unforgettable adventure.
