Nahe wine is known for its outstanding flavour, but the hiking trail along the banks of the Nahe River is equally as delectable. The almost 100-kilometre (62 mi) long Rhine-Nahe Wine Trail is a delight for the palate and the eye. Numerous wine taverns and inns invite you to taste their produce. You hike gently up and down from Kirn to Bingen on the Rhine, following gentle paths along the quiet Nahe River, which flows into the Rhine in Bingen. Along the way, vineyards, wooded areas, vantage points and architectural highlights await.
In this Collection, the Wine Trail is divided into six stages. At the beginning, you hike through gently rolling countryside and small towns, such as Monzingen with its half-timbered houses. Then you head to Bad Sobernheim, where you can walk the barefoot path, before reaching Staudernheim. On the third and fourth stages, you hike through the rocky Nahe Valley.
Fantastic views await you from the Heimberg tower, the Hermannsberg Estate and the Rotenfels. You'll also visit the two magnificent spa towns of Bad Münster am Stein-Ebernburg and Bad Kreuznach, which are connected by the Salinental Valley. In the latter part of your adventure, the landscape becomes gentler again and the Rhine-Nahe Wine Trail leads you through the wonderful vineyards of Guldental, Laubenheim and Münster Sarmsheim. In Bingen, you reach your destination at the mouth of the Nahe.
You can reach the start point Kirn and the destination Bingen, as well as many towns along the way, by train. In addition, the side valleys of the Nahe are served by buses from the Rhein-Nahe local transport association (rnn.info ). Some stage destinations only have limited accommodation options, so it's best to book in advance. Throughout this hike, you follow well-maintained paths lined with numerous rest areas and places to stop for refreshments. By the way, the Naheland is the home of the spit-roast – you should definitely try it accompanied by a glass of wine.
The vineyards change their appearance at different times of the year: In spring, the vines sprout light green, young leaves that become darker in summer. By September, the grapes hang heavily on the vines. The colours are particularly splendid in autumn. At the time, many wine lovers flock to the region for ‘Federweißen’ harvesting.
If you like wine – in a glass or as a hiking companion – then the Rhine-Nahe Wine Trail is just right for you.
