The first place in the ranking of cycling tourism routes, and therefore the 2021 title, was confirmed by the A.D.F.C., the German Cyclists Association according to which the most popular stretch of the route, almost entirely flat and paved and of easy level, is the one that it crosses Saxony for 180 km, from Pirna in Saxon Switzerland to Torgau passing through Dresden, Meissen and the wonders of the Valley of the Elbe River. For years it has been the most popular cycle path in Germany, the reasons for its notoriety aren't lacking: the paths in the stretch of the Czech Republic are characterized by few climbs, imposing inhabited centers and numerous opportunities for rest.
In Germany, captivating landscapes and exciting cities form an exciting blend of natural and cultural attractions and all this is located on a perfectly developed cycle path.
The Elbe Cycle Path is approximately 1.270 kilometers long and accompanies the Elbe from its source in the Czech Sudeten Mountains to Cuxhaven, where it flows into the North Sea. It covers a total distance of 1.091 kilometers from the source, where the Elbe is still called "Labe", to the estuary.
One-third of the river's length winds through the Czech Republic, while the remaining 727 kilometers flow to the sea above northern Germany
For this tour, I divided the varied cycle path along the Elbe river into the main section of 8 stages, each with an average length of about 100 kilometers. The first stages take you from shortly after the source of the Elbe across the German-Czech border. On the German part of the Elbe Cycle Route we will pass through seven federal states, each with its own charm. From the Elbe Sandstone Mountains in Saxon Switzerland to the important Elbe River Biosphere Reserve in Brandenburg and the trendy cultural metropolis of Hamburg. The further north you pedal, the more you notice the unmistakable scent of the North Sea.Especially on the German side, the Elbe Cycle Path is also very suitable for beginners, less ambitious cyclists or families with children thanks to the flat route.Due to its popularity, numerous cyclist accommodations have settled along the cycle path, adapted to the needs of cyclists.Other advantages include being exclusively for cyclists, mostly paved, well signposted, wide enough and well serviced. The route crosses mainly agricultural and wooded areas, as well as numerous natural parks and protected areas, including the UNESCO biosphere reserve Elba river landscape.Along the way there are places of historical and cultural interest, such as Dresden, with its Baroque buildings and the famous Blue Bridge, but also Torgau, where you can enjoy a good German beer, Wittenberg, the city of Martin Luther, Magdeburg and, finally, Hamburg .This cycle path along the great German river has something for everyone.
