Earlier this year I planned to visit the Lake District with my family, in-laws, doggo's and my bike! We loved it so much that I convinced them, with the addition of my mum to go back to the Lake District again in 2 months!
The first visit took us to a lovely spot called Near Sawrey, home to one of Beatrix Potter's properties, a 17th century farmhouse. We visited it with my then 4 month old baby girl, Lola! I created a few routes in Grizedale Forest, thanks to a blend of using the Discovery feature tool on Komoot, local rider information - through my Instagram, and peeps on YouTube - they know who they are! A bit about Grizedale Forest, it's a 24.47 km² area of woodland in the Lake District of North West England, located to the east of Coniston Water and to the south of Hawkshead. It is made up of a number of hills, small tarns and the settlements of Grizedale and Satterthwaite. It's a mountain biking, gravel and road riding haven, it has something for everyone. All my rides were off-piste routes that are not marked & locals have put their time into developing. They're awesome trails that run well in good conditions and when ridden responsibly. A decent level of riding ability is required.
From the best of my knowledge the off-pistes are not policed by the Forestry England. If you're looking for family friendly routes they're plenty to choose from that can be located on the trail boards and signed posts around the Forest. For expert advance on the above have a chat with the loverly guys at BikeTreks bike shop, it's located just before the cafe on site. they helped me out when my chain link snapped off. A quick fix and mega chat and I was on my way again! My riding time was limited on this trip but it was perfect too because I had to get home for daddy duties and spending time making new memories with my amazing family. I headed out on my mountain bike three times during our 5 day trip on 2 to 3 hour rides in the mornings, and made sure I got back in time for lunch & daddy duties. It's awesome knowing that I can manage juggling my work live, riding bikes and being a new dad at the same time. it's been great! If you're near Coniston Water, Hawkshead, Grizedale or Satterthwaite, checj out my routes in this collection. On my second visit 2 month later we stayed in the Popular Market town of Kendal. There was one more ride or should I say Hike-a-bike that I've wanted to do since 2021, Helvellyn Peak, it's home to Britain's only alpine species of butterfly, the rare Mountain Ringlet butterfly (Erebia epiphron) and also gaping views really tough sections of trails - it felt like I really was in the Alpes. Another one to go check out for sure.
