Emerald green water, an idyllic island in the centre of the lake and the mighty mountain panorama of the Austrian Alps – many people know the Fernsteinsee lake primarily from driving past it on the Fernpass road, which winds its way through the Tyrolean Alps shortly after the German-Austrian border.
Although the sight of this little corner of the world immediately awakens a longing to explore, few people stop to take a closer look. Yet this spot is a perfect starting point for challenging high alpine mountain adventures and also invites you to swim, relax and explore nature. In this Collection, I'll show you three breathtaking hikes from Fernsteinsee.
In spring, you'll find plenty of wild berries here, as well as juniper trees and mountain herbs all year round. In summer, after a strenuous hike, a dip in the crystal-clear and refreshingly cold water of the mountain lake awaits.
Situated right between the Lechtal Alps and the Mieming Range, the trail leads directly from Fernsteinsee through varied terrain up to peaks well above 2,000 metres (6,500 ft). With the summit ascents to the Loreakopf (2,471 metres / 8,107 ft) and the Wannig (2,493 metres / 8,179 ft), you can complete two challenging mountain Tours. But be careful, the ascents are both technically and physically demanding. They require alpine experience and sure-footedness.
There’s also plenty to discover in the immediate vicinity on rest days. You can visit Fernstein Castle and Lake Sameranger and walk to the ruins of Sigmundsburg Castle.
The area is particularly suitable for those who really want to get back into the mountains but only have a few days to spare. At Fernsteinsee, you can experience nature away from the main tourist areas and without having to travel long distances to the hiking trails. Whether you choose a campsite or hotel, you can set up your base camp in the immediate vicinity of the lake. The nearest large supermarket is in Nassereith, a five-minute car or bus ride away. In addition to the Fernsteinsee service area, there are also other restaurants there.
Are you already thinking about where to stow your swimming gear and hiking boots? Then these Tours are just the thing for you. Have fun in the mountains.
