World Champion downhiller Miranda Miller asked me put together a route for her in Southern Arizona to go on a blind bikepacking challenge. She asked for it to be a bit mountain bikey and doesn't want to know anything about it in advance. I love this kind of stuff!I'm starting her off on the Arizona Trail at the Picketpost Trailhead, near Superior, AZ. This is the northern terminus of the AZT 300 race-- an exceptional section of rugged single track.Miranda will ride 96 miles of AZT single track to get near Oracle, Arizona. From there, she'll take the Mount Lemmon Control Road (chunky gravel) to the top of mountain.I've given her two options at the top-- either descending the Lemmon Drop or taking the scenic highway down to Tucson.Leaving the city is a bit of a transfer section-- not beautiful, but very convenient to access all of the amenities. About 50km out of town, the route passes its final mini-mart, the paved road turns to dirt and then double track connecting to the base of Box Canyon.Box Canyon leads to Sonoita-- pavement to Patagonia and then dirt out to the San Rafael Valley. This is the good stuff-- wide open gravel, beautiful views, minimal traffic, free & legal camping. The next chance for water is Parker Canyon Lake. Then the route follows the Mexican border through ranch lands, finally heading back to the I-19 corridor-- quick resupply and then back out on the Ruby Road, past a ghost town to Arivaca, headquarters for a wildlife refuge. Quiet pavement heads back to Amado at I-19, another chance for minimal resupply before heading back up Salero Canyon. Cutting through Mount Hopkins is an ass kicker, but maybe the coolest part of the southern loop. The route ends on Main Street in Patagonia.
