Beernem continued to grow in the second half of the 20th century.
The population increase was initially concentrated in the vicinity of the station, where, for example, the district "Turkey" arises to the north (opposite canal). Residential areas were built near the old center of Beernem (Beernem Platse) between Kasteeldreef and Rollebaanstraat (Berenheemwijk) and between the canal and Diksmuidse Boterweg (as here with the Depré district).
To connect these new districts of the old center of Beernem to the station smoothly, a cyclist and pedestrian bridge was built, for which the foundation stone was laid in July 2006 and opened in October 2008 with a festive opening.
