Molenaarshof: waar ooit “Caeckaert’s molen” stond

Around 1900 Sint-Joris still had 3 windmills, and it must have been five before. The name of one of these mill is the "Caeckaert's Mill", after the miller's family name. The mill was located on the south side of the Lattenklieverstraat near the Galgeveld (see aerial photo from 1935). The Molenaarshof is now located on this site.The Caeckaertsmolen was a stone grain windmill, type of mountain mill. Edouard (Eddy) Caekaert-Lefevre, a miller in Sint-Joris-ten-Distel, received permission on September 19, 1872 from the Provincial Deputation of the province of West Flanders to build a grain windmill on a piece of land that he had just bought. The woman died on December 10, 1911. The sons Camiel and Marinus Caeckaert continued the business, while the sisters Maria Louisa and Paula took care of the household.The Cackaerts added a steam mill around 1920. The mill was out of operation before 1940, but was still running a bit in the Second World War. The mill was mainly used by small farmers who were "grain farmers".On June 26, 1945 the mill was sold to A. Scherrens from Wingene. He installed an engine and in 1946 also sometimes ran the windmill. The windmill was demolished in early September 1954.The detached (and beautifully preserved) house next to the Molenaarshof (Lattenklieversstraat no. 64) was built in 1869 and has been used as a miller's house since the mill was built in 1873.
