  • "The Kaisertor is part of the former city fortifications in Lübeck. To protect the new mill dam and the built-in vital water mills, the city built around 1300 two defense towers, the Buten and the Kaiserturm. The buttress tower (buten "outside") was already demolished at the end of the 16th century and replaced by a round turret, the "round kennel" or "fisherman's tower". The Emperor's Tower - supposedly named after its builder - flanked the protective ramparts. Passersby entered a kennel through a tortoise tunnel. From him a bridge led over the moat into the foreland. This gate exit was used in contrast to the mill gates little, so that let him the council around 1500. This did not happen, as a legend wants to make believable, because Emperor Charles IV crossed the gate in 1375 and after no one should step through it.The real reason was a dispute between the Council and the canons, reports the chronicler Hans Regkmann around 1540. The canons wanted to ban the way over the Mühlendamm or levy customs when passing. Despite an appeal by the Senate, the cathedral chapter would have insisted on his request, bricked the gate and broken the bridge. When the fortifications were strengthened in the 17th century, the master builder of the Wall put a projecting bastion, the "Bastion Kaiser" in front of the tower. Powder was stored in the dismantled casemates. The tower itself, which had become futile in defense against modern guns, broke off to a stump that towered over the wall four meters. In the 19th century, he was put on an upper floor. Here moved in 1826 the navigation school, the later maritime school Lübeck. When the "Bastion Kaiser" was cut in 1897 during the construction of the Elbe-Lübeck Canal and the ruins of the Zwinger were uncovered, the bricked-up gate was opened and made it to Wallstraße. On August 26, 1900, Emperor Wilhelm II passed through the Emperor's Gate to open a boat trip on the Elbe-Lübeck Canal on board the Lubeca on the way to the city harbor.
