Straße des Friedens

The listed building complex is one of the most important buildings designed and preserved as a total work of art by the architect, designer and theorist Henry van de Velde. The Belgian who came from painting is considered a pioneer of the Bauhaus.
Haus Schulenburg was built in 1913/14 for the Gera textile manufacturer, orchid grower and art collector Paul Schulenburg and anticipates many design elements of the Bauhaus and Art Deco.
The entire house and garden complex is a listed building and has been extensively restored since 1997. The outbuildings, the inner courtyard, the extensive gardens (including the planting with historical plant varieties) and the exterior of the main building have been restored. The culturally and historically important interiors have got their original wall coverings (wood, fabric, stucco, wallpaper) and paintwork back and some of them have been furnished with the original van de Velde furniture and lamps. The rooms on the first and second floors are available for exhibitions.
The main building houses a private museum with the world's second largest collection of book designs by van de Velde, as well as furniture, textiles, designs and publications by the artist. This permanent exhibition is complemented by numerous oil paintings and gouaches by the artist couple Heinrich Linzen and Hilde Linzen-Gebhardt from Weimar. After training at the Grand Ducal Art School and at the Bauhaus (Heinrich Linzen) in Weimar, both did commissioned work for Schulenburg in the 1920s and 1930s.
In the basement of the house there is an event center with a foyer, exhibition rooms and a cabaret (cabaret "Wirsing" Gera, guest performances, jazz concerts). ShopArt offers art around 1900, modern visual arts and handicrafts, extravagant accessories and souvenirs. A cafeteria is open all year round.

Haus Schulenburg accueille et dit au revoir aux invités voyageant vers et depuis Gera. Il est situé directement sur la Strasse des Friedens (Bundesstrasse 2), dans laquelle se trouvent un grand nombre de villas.
