  • "Johannes Junkers Monument (with relief)"It may be known to many that the Hülser mountain owes its formation to the Ice Age. With its for the level proud 63 meters it is the highest natural elevation Krefelds. Meanwhile, the Capuchin and the Inrather Berg, two former garbage dumps, have taken the altitude record from him. What only a few know is that it used to be a bald dome, which was used as a commons, as common pasture. His clay deposits, which were mined by the Hülser potters, were in demand. The current appearance of the Hülser mountain owes another generous Krefelder, Johann Junkers (8.9.12828 to 30.3.1899). Junkers was the founder and chairman of the Krefelder Wanderbund and therefore very close to nature. The Hülser mountain was already well developed by local traffic at this time, since 1881, the railway line, on which today the silt runs, led to Niep. From 1884, Junkers bought more and more land on and on Hülser Berg and raised the area at his own expense. In order to increase the attractiveness of the mountain, he built a forest house with a small refreshment hall, from which later the Bergschänke arose.Another attraction goes back to him, the lookout tower: he was built on his initiative and expense as a wooden tower and inaugurated on 28.10.1886, but already on 6.11. destroyed by a storm. Since the tower had already gained in popularity in the short time of its existence, a new steel tower was built in early 1887, which was inaugurated on 26.5.1887 solemnly. The tower was named Johannesturm. The current tower is a successor from 1973, since the old tower was dismantled at the end of World War II.Junkers donated the land he had bought and reforested in the city of Krefeld for further public use. The city continued this idea of John Junker and subsequently bought terrain around the mountain, so that a large contiguous area was created. At the same time, the beautification association took care of the further expansion of the site. The source of hermit was edged, bird protection shrubs and other trails emerged. In this tradition was moved on and so created a trim trail and the game reserve.
