  • Summary
Historical route to the theaters of war 1915-1918
The Monte Piana towering between Rienz and Popenatal like an oversized rocky wedge has high qualities as a mountain of views: Here you are facing the magnificent dolomite massifs all around at the same height and in due distance, thus allowing their power and size to be fully absorbed. Countless tunnels, trenches and wireweaves remind of the Dolomite war 1915-1918, in which the higher southern summit (Monte Piana, 2324 m) was occupied by the Italians, the northern summit (Monte Piano, 2305 m) of the Austrians. The open-air museum, created between 1977 and 1982 by the "Association of Friends of the Dolomites", can be visited along a »historical circular route«.
    starting point

Auronzo / Monte Piana, 200 m north of the pass of Misurina (1752 m, bus stop), 22 km from Dobbiaco, 15 km from Cortina, 24 km from Auronzo. From here by jeep to Rif. Bosi, 2205 m, on the southern edge of the Piana plateau. Jeep traffic between 1. (5.) June and 30. Sept. (5. Okt.) in the 15-Minuten-clock daily from 9.00-17.00 o'clock
