Former Pferdeschwemme (= Wätte), later piglet market.

The first water supply was once the Stadtbach, an open watercourse. When the homeowners dug their own house wells or took care of themselves from the tube wells at the market place, the stream was dammed up into a small pond in order to wash the horses (horse flood). Because the water was so shallow that you could 'wade' in it, the place was called the "wad". However, the whole thing didn't smell very fine, which is why in 1792 the mud was filled up. The piglet market was held on Tuesdays until the 1960s (!). When the square was redesigned (1990), the bronze pig dealer (“Saubarthel”) emerged from a design competition.
