The university town of Ulm is located on the Danube on the edge of the Swabian Alb in Baden-Württemberg on the border with Bavaria. Ulm was first mentioned in a document in July 854, was Royal Palace and Free Imperial City, was then from 1802 Bavarian and is since 1810 Württemberg. Since then, Ulm has been separated from the former territory on the right bank of the Danube, which remained near Bavaria and on which the city of Neu-Ulm is located. The city is best known for its Gothic cathedral with the highest church tower in the world.
