1926Who was this man who was given a memorial here? Dr. Goepel, a doctor in Bayreuth, was born on 3 March 1873 to Altenburg in Thuringia. He died as a lonely person on June 4, 1924 near Karlsfeld in the Erzgebirge. The doctor was an excellent connoisseur of the Fichtelgebirge, a friend of nature and nature, who was to be found in every season and everywhere in the mountains.Since the founding of the Fichtelgebirgsverein - and this was the main task of the Heimatverein - hiking trails have been created and marked. However, the markings were not uniform as we find them today. On 5 February 1922, the FGV General Assembly had set up a committee to work on a uniform re-marking of the hiking trails in the Fichtelgebirge. Chairman of the committee Goepel, who soon came up with a concept that is basically still valid today in the marking system.At that time, Dr. Goepel: The Fichtelgebirge is ideal as a winter sports area and you should also use it for tourism. It was he who had the idea of ​​founding a winter sports club in Weissenstadt. The then 1st chairman of the winter sports club Hans Grüner and stone technician Hermann Schöpf of the company GRASYMA AG searched on Waldsteinhang suitable for a memorial granite stone.
