  • The castle is mentioned for the first time in 1214 on the occasion of a legal dispute: The Counts of Veldenz had illegally built it on the territory of the Benedictine monastery of St. Remigius in Reims. Although therefore the castle was ordered, it remained intact and continued to belong to the Counts, after their extinction in 1444 the Dukes of Palatinate-Zweibrücken, until the de facto end of the Duchy in 1793.In addition to its long-standing military importance (it was occupied in 1693 by the French troops during the Reunionskriege) it served a variety of purposes:It was a side residence of their masters and housed in 1529 as guests of their masters to the Marburg religious conversation passing through reformers Zwingli, Oekolampad, Butzer and storm
It was the seat of an extensive agricultural operation of their masters
It was the seat of the administration, which was relocated in 1755 by Duke Christian IV in the city of Kusel.
It was never conquered or destroyed by attacks and was the only undestroyed castle in the Palatinate after the Palatinate War of Succession. However, it was already in 1693 - when she was still used stately - as "verwahrloßt" and "ruinos" described. It was severely damaged by a major fire on 26 October 1799 and has since been a ruin. Only the castle chapel and the Landschreiberei survived the fire intact, as they were in sufficient distance to the main castle. Inhabited she was still. From 1816 the area belonged to the castle to Saxe-Coburg-Saalfeld. This exclave was named in 1819 after the castle Principality Lichtenberg, but existed only until 1834, when it was handed over to Prussia. The decline continued under the new owners.
Since 1895, the castle is a listed building. From 1922, the extension of the bailey to the youth hostel. From 1979 to 1984, the Zehntscheune was rebuilt and set up in her the Museum of Musicians. 1983/84, the keep received two more floors and was roofed.
