Deutsche Goldschmiedehaus (formerly Altstädter Rathaus) is the former town hall of the old town of Hanau, which has been used as a museum since the 19th century. The German goldsmith's house was erected as half-timbered building on the long side of the Old Town market between two stone gable walls and on a stone basement level. It comes from late gothic and early renaissance and is dated by a construction inscription to the year 1538. Its functional predecessor as town hall from the 15th century stood on the opposite side of the market square.
After the city administrations of the old town and the new city of Hanau had been merged in the third decade of the 19th century, the building as a town hall was superfluous. From the end of the 19th century until the Second World War, it served as a museum of the Hanau History Society. In the air raids on Hanau in March 1945, the building burned down to the foundations and the two gable walls. The timber frame seen today is therefore a reconstruction from 1955-1958
Today's use: Hanau also describes itself as a city of fine jewelery, has a tradition dating back to the beginning of the 17th century goldsmith craft, with the State Drawing Academy headquarters of a leading institution for the training of goldsmiths and also the seat of the German Society for goldsmith. On October 18, 1942, the German goldsmith's house was founded and was located in the building, to which the then located there Museum of the Hanau History Association was relocated to the City Palace. The sandstone fountain in front of the town hall is an important work of Renaissance stonemasonry. It was commissioned in 1607/1608 by the Council of the Old Town Hanau and created by the sculptor Johannes Rab from Büdingen. The fountain is crowned by Justitia with Libra and sword. The two lions on the left and right hold blazon shields with the coat of arms of the old town Hanau and the counts of Hanau-Münzenberg.
