Conseils

  • The largest medieval church in East Frisia today stands in the center of the Norder market place. The oldest part of this church is the lower nave, which - probably as a successor to a wooden church - was built in the early 13th century as a Romanesque single-nave church. This closed in the east with a semicircular apse and had two entrances on the north and south side, small arched windows and a flat wooden beam ceiling.
The church is dedicated to St. Liudger, the West Frisian-born "Apostle of the Frisians" and first bishop of Münster (died 809).
The bell tower was built in the early 14th century. He is freestanding as in most medieval churches in East Frisia.
Around the same time (probably 1318), the church in the east was extended by a transept with three square cross vaults. After they had already come back in the 15th century, the whole transept was rebuilt in 1445 with reinforced walls and pillars in its present form.
Subsequently, the towering three-nave choir was built, which was probably completed in 1455. Significantly involved in the reconstruction of the transept and new construction of the choir was the Norder chief and later East Frisian Imperial Count Ulrich I from the house Cirksena, whose coat of arms in the closing stones of the Vierungsgewölbe and the eastern high choir vault (above the high altar) can be found.
The floor plan of the high choir resembles that of the 1443 completed choir house Martinikirche in the Dutch Groningen, which is only slightly higher. Both choirs have a chancel with two altar pieces and to the east the six-sided choir ending with a pillar (not a window) in the central axis. The arched arches, which reveal the view into the half-high ambulatory, are supported by mighty round pillars.
Over the centuries, the Ludgeri Church has been rebuilt many times - the last time in 2008 and 2009, when the old seaside and the former sexton's house were redesigned to make way for the World Shop and the Municipal Library.
