  • The main church St. Jacobi is located in the center of Hamburg on the Steinstraße. This was one of the main streets of early Hamburg; today it is dominated by the office buildings of the 20th century.St. Jacobi emerged from a chapel on a Way of St. James. Therefore the church was consecrated to the apostle James. At the first mention in 1255 St. Jacobi was still outside the secured city east of the Heidenwall. Only after the extension of the city wall in 1260, she was involved in the Hamburg city fortification. The main part of the church goes back to a new building in the 14th century: Between 1350 and about 1400, a three-aisled hall church was built in the Gothic style, similar to the neighboring church of St. Peter. In 1438, a sacristy building was erected in the northeast, today Hamburg's only testimony of Gothic secular architecture. At the end of the 15th century St. Jacobi was extended by a fourth nave on the south side. In the Middle Ages, the tower of the church consisted of five floors, but did not have a spire, but concluded with two parallel pitched roofs. It was only at the beginning of the early modern period in the years between 1587 and 1589 a spire was created, which was borrowed in its late Gothic design of the nearby St. Gertruden chapel.During the Second World War, the church was destroyed. It burned out, and the tower plunged through the vaults into the interior. The historic interior had previously been evacuated. After the war, St. Jacobi was restored to its medieval model until 1963; Only the tower with a height of 125 m designed the Hamburg architects Hopp & Jäger modern, as they had done a year earlier in the reconstruction of the Old Town Nicolaikirche in Bielefeld with its tower. The famous Arp Schnitger organ from 1693 on the western gallery is, with its 60 stops and about 4,000 pipes, the largest surviving baroque organ in northern Europe.Source and more information:

  • La Sankt-Jacobi-Kirche est l'une des cinq principales églises évangéliques luthériennes de Hambourg. Malgré de nombreux changements au cours de l'histoire et des destructions massives pendant la Seconde Guerre mondiale, l'église est l'un des rares édifices médiévaux survivants du centre-ville. C'est un bien culturel protégé en vertu de la Convention de La Haye.
