Genivolta's very suggestive hydraulic gear is the so-called Dead Tombs - Thirteen Bridges. The general picture is fascinating: a tangle of canals, sluices, gullies, joints, manholes, bridges, siphons, dispensers, unloaders, binders, synthesized dividers in the space of 200 steps. This is the most important hydraulic junction as the concentration of artificial watercourses in the province of Cremona suitable for irrigating the fields. Here the civic canals of Cremona and Grande Pallavicino meet, taken from the Oglio, the irrigation ditches originating from the fountains placed along the border line between the present provinces of Cremona and Bergamo and the Vacchelli canal, which carries the waters of the Adda.L the name of Death Tombs derives, in all probability, from the presence on this site of one or more artifacts (tombs, manholes) that have fallen into disuse. During the 12th century, a large quantity of water from fountains opened in the Cremona area was conveyed to the Old Canal in the direction of Cremona. The canal, to which was later added water extracted from the Oglio a Calcio, was adapted to navigation in the 14th century, becoming the current civic canal of Cremona. The Grande Pallavicino canal is the main channel of the irrigation network of the Pallavicino condominium, consisting of a series of waterways of different origins and united in a single property by Galeazzo I Pallavicino in the 16th century. Fed by Oglio between Calcio and Pumenengo, it subsequently received the contribution of various open fountains along the strip now identified as Basso Bergamasco (passage from the upper to the lower Lombard plain). At the Dead Tombs the Vacchelli canal, built immediately after the Unification of Italy, dispenses its waters to the civic and Grande Pallavicino canals, as well as to a bundle of irrigation ditches next to them, thus transforming the Adda into the most generous source of water supply. for the Cremona area. A spillway channel, known as the Genivolta Scolmatore, pours into the Oglio in the event of floods the greatest flows.
