The monastery was donated by Volrad von Bodwede, Count of Dannenberg and nephew of Henry the Lion. It was first mentioned in documents in 1197. It is one of the six Lüneklöstern that became Protestant convents after the Reformation.
After a fire in the 12th century Benedictines from the monastery Walsrode came to Ebstorf, and Ebstorf developed into a Marian pilgrimage. The monastery buildings from the 14th century, in the style of the north German brick Gothic, are still completely preserved, as well as the hall church with the nuns gallery. The provostry dates from the 15th century.
In the 15th century, the life of the nuns changed after the Bursfeld monastery reform, which demanded a more austere life.
In 1529, the Celle Guelph Duke Ernst the Confessor converted the monastery into a Protestant convent, but it was not until 1565 that the reformation of the convent became a reality. Protestant women still live here today under the direction of a Protestant abbess.
The monastery became famous for its Ebstorfer world map from the 13th century. The original is burned 1943 in Hanover during one of the air raids on Hanover. In the monastery you can visit a true copy. Other sights include the medieval glass windows in the nunnery, the Madonna statues in the cloister from the 13th to 15th centuries, a figure of St. Maurice, the baptismal font of 1310 and a Renaissance pulpit from 1615, as well as various medieval chests and cabinets.
