  • When this castle was built is unclear. 1140 is first mentioned an Ortwin von Waldeck. The oldest surviving building remains do not date before 1200. The lords of Waldeck were "grave-like" estate and had earned in the course of the 13th century, a more extensive territory. Several estates on monasteries testify to their prosperity. This should not least have been favored by the exploitation of the nearby silver mines of Neubulach. However, the influence of the Waldeckers in the region seems to have become too strong, so that their feudal lords, the counts of Hohenberg, were forced to besiege several Waldecker castles twice, 1279 and 1284. The second siege took place with the support of the Habsburg King Rudolf von Habsburg and ended with the destruction of the castles. After the destruction Albrecht von Hohenberg became owner and rebuilt the castle. He used von Waldeck as bailiffs, who secretly united with the Lords of Baden and in 1287 defeated those of Hohenberg. Their victory made them noble. With the extinction of the lines of those of Waldeck 1417 and 1553, the castle went to Württemberg. Several sources report the same number of five castles on a mountain ("quinque castra in uno monte"). This statement was long doubted. However, investigations in the run-up to the Waldeck ruin have revealed that three more castles existed on the mountain spur west of it. Through humpback stone masonry remains, all three are 13th century buildings. Thus, the source tradition of several castles on a mountain is correct. The missing fifth castle could be seen in a tower standing separately on a boulder which preceded the western castle. After the destruction several castles must have been rebuilt. However, these were given up again at the latest in the 15th century and only the now well-known, well-preserved Waldeck ruins were further developed and inhabited until the 17th century. Presumably, the plant was finally destroyed in 1688 in the Palatinate War of Succession by French troops.Source Wiki
