The history of the Vestische Straßenbahn GmbH starts with the tram Recklinghausen-Herten-Wanne. This enterprise was closed by a contract of 12 and 23 June 1899 by the rural municipality, the district and the city Recklinghausen with the municipalities Herne-Crange, Herten and Wanne-Eickel. The since 1888 operated on the route between Recklinghausen, Herten and Wanne horse buses should be replaced by an electric tram connection.
On May 10, 1901, the line between Recklinghausen-Steintor over Hochlar, thistles, Herten and Crange to Wanne was opened. The 12.8-kilometer route was one-third in the street and two-thirds in a side position next to the street.
