The New Palace is a castle on the west side of the park Sanssouci in Potsdam. The construction was begun in 1763 after the end of the Seven Years War under Frederick the Great and completed in 1769. It is considered the last significant castle of Baroque in Prussia. Friedrich had not planned it as a royal residence, but as a castle for guests of his court. Emperor Wilhelm II made the New Palace from 1888 to 1918 permanently his summer residence.Managed by the Prussian Palaces and Gardens Foundation Berlin-Brandenburg, the castle is accessible as a museum. In the communs, the former business buildings, faculties and parts of the administration of the University of Potsdam are housed. Wikipedia

At the western end of the main avenue of the park Sanssoucier rises a huge castle, which is recognizable from afar by its high dome-shaped dome: the New Palace.
The large complex clearly served the representation, in contrast to the intimate and rather modest Schloss Sanssouci. Inside, visitors will find magnificent ballrooms, grand galleries and princely apartments, as well as the Baroque Palace Theater of Sanssouci in the south wing. Here you can experience exquisite works of art and handicraft of the 18th century in their original context.
The New Palace is the last palace that Frederick the Great built in his park. It was a demonstration of the unbroken capacity of the Prussian state after the years of privation of the Seven Years' War, 1756-1763.
Frederick himself has rarely lived here, even later, the castle was mostly used only as a guest apartment and for festivities. The recently restored lower Fürstenquartier with Tressenzimmer, concert room and Oval Cabinet shows one of the most precious interiors in Europe. Likewise, the Grottensaal was also integrated into the tour of the castle after extensive renovation work. The mysterious sparkle and glitter with which Frederick the Great wanted to impress his visitors can now be experienced again.
Later, Wilhelm II, the last German emperor, used the New Palace with his family as his preferred residence.
