    Hilpoltstein castle ruins
A castle on the sandstone cliff above the town was documented from the 11th century. It flourished at the time of the Lords of Stein in the 13th and 14th centuries. The last resident was Dorothea Maria, widow of the Count Palatine Ottoheinrich ll. from Neuburg-Sulzbach. She died at Hilpoltstein Castle in 1639.
The castle ruins have been archaeologically examined and renovated in recent years. In the eastern part is the keep (tower) with walls three meters thick. During the summer months, a visit to the keep offers a wide view of the surrounding area at weekends. The cellar at the Burganger from the 11th and 12th centuries was renovated in an elaborate voluntary service by the museum and home association. It offers a wonderful ambience for cultural events, as a wedding room and for weddings in historical style.

Hilpoltstein is a town in the Central Franconian district of Roth and is about 30 kilometers south of Nuremberg. Heinrich von Stein and his son Hilpolt I from the von Stein family are considered to be the actual founders of the “oppidum in Lapide” around 1280.
