A monument that is almost finished in the meantime.

The "Colossus of Prora" is the core of the complex and originally consisted of eight identical blocks lined up along the Prorer Wiek along a length of 4.5 kilometers. Three blocks were destroyed between 1945 and 1949 except for a few segments. It remained five blocks over a length of about 2.5 kilometers, which were around 1950 under the auspices of the "Cold War" to the "most monumental barracks in the GDR" converted and expanded. For four decades, the area was used for military purposes. Prora became a restricted area. After 1990, the Bundeswehr wound up the military base. After initial civilian interim use fell much of the former barracks. Since 2004, the blocks have been sold separately and transformed into residential and hotel complexes

Soon history and new apartments are being built in the old ruins.
Behind the building is one of the most beautiful beaches on the island.

Prora is a bit confusing for the first time visitor. Here is a little orientation
The hostel is the northern start of the building. Shortly behind it comes the Museum Prora Center.
prora-zentrum.de In the museum there is information about the history and also guided tours
This is followed by a section with unused parts of the building and partially used areas.
This is followed by a first block that is turned into apartments.
This ends the first building complex.
You now come in the middle, clearly recognizable by the one realized central wing with the blue semicircular building. Here is the Documentation Center Prora.
    proradok.de
Again, there are exhibitions and guided tours. I personally liked that very much (6 € admission)
From here it gets bizarre, now you come to the "New Prora" dust gives way asphalt, wheels soft Porsche Cayenne and BMW X5. This is crowned by the luxury hotel in the middle of the building.
Sounds critical? Yes, but it is precisely because of these contrasts a visit that I can recommend. With this orientation, you can choose what you want to see.

Started in 1935 and not finished. Today partly hotel, apartment, flat or other such as Fitness club. The length is impressive. There is still a lot of construction going on.

Interesting how the building keeps changing. You may be divided about the renovation, I think it's great that the building is finally finding a sensible use. The history of the former KDF baths can be found in the museum - you should definitely visit it.
