The Plassenburg is an imposing castle that towers over the historic center of Kulmbach and is the landmark of the city. From the Rondell you have a magnificent view over Kulmbach and the surrounding area. The Plassenburg is home to several museums: the German Pewter Figure Museum, the Army Museum Frederick the Great, the Landscape Museum Obermain and the Museum Hohenzollern in Franconia. In summer, the Plassenburg Open Airs take place in the Schönen Hof - the most beautiful Renaissance courtyard north of the Alps.

The Christiansportal dominates the lower courtyard of the Plassenburg in Kulmbach. Christian von Brandenburg-Kulmbach had it built in 1607 as Manneristic grand portal. Above the gate you can see him in knight's armor on an ascending horse. He was ordered to order the Roman goddess Minerva. She is the guardian of knowledge and the protector of craftsmen and trade. As a goddess she stands for wisdom, wise warfare, art and shipbuilding.

In the beautiful courtyard, lined by the two-storey arcade corridors and the bust reliefs, there is the entrance to the various museums.
In the German pewter museum is u.a. the largest diorama in the world with over 19,000 figures. Shown is the destruction of Kulmbach in the German War, on Konraditag, November 26, 1553.
In addition, the landscape museum Obermain, with the Pröbitscher treasure, and the Army Museum Frederick the Great on the Plassenburg are housed.

The larger-than-life warrior figures and the seated goddess in the gable of the gate frame the triangular triangle of the margrave Christian sitting on a rearing stallion in full armor. From 1606 to 1608 he had this triumphal arch displayed in his honor in the High Bastei. It was the conclusion of the reconstruction measures of the Plassenburg since 1557 after the destruction, which were a result of the second Markgrave war (1552 to 1554).
