Sortie à vélo - Incontournable
The Baldeneysee near Essen Werden is not only beautiful, but also full of history. On the opposite slope is Villa Hügel, once the home of the Krupp family. On it alone one could write several books ...
Here at the dam you can make a little pause and just enjoy the beautiful area. If the break is a bit longer, we recommend a short detour into the old town of Werden.

The path from Kettwig to Lake Baldeney leads through one of the most beautiful sections of the Ruhr, with lots of nature on both banks and the large Ruhr island on the east bank in Essen-Werden. Most of the islands before it are nature conservation, concretely: bird sanctuary, and of course forbidden to enter. In Werden there are then on the eastern shore again a paddle boat rental, whose customers should keep an eye on.
Finally you reach the lock Baldeney. The situation here is a bit tricky: on the eastern shore in front of the dam, it is extremely shallow, sometimes well below 50cm deep. Depending on the water level, even a flat pebble island is formed there. The ground is not healthy for any boat hull. West of the Baldeney lock - which is almost in the middle of the dam - is a weir, so that there is a flow directly in front of the entrance to the lock, which moves the boat to starboard. So carefully and at the same time not too slow retract into the lock
