The Durlacher Karlsburg was destroyed in 1689 in the Palatinate War of Succession. For the reconstruction of the castle and Durlach itself building materials were needed. For this purpose, this raft ditch was created in 1699. He served to transport stones from the local quarries.
From 1715, stones were also needed for the newly founded residence city of Karlsruhe. The Floßgraben created a navigable connection over the Landgraben Karlsruhe past the Schloss Gottesaue. At the place there is a billboard (board 9/39 - historical tour Grötzingen).

The quarries in the north and south of the village were an important source of building material for the cities of Durlach and Karlsruhe in the 17th and 18th centuries. From 1699 onwards, transport was carried out by water, to the detriment of the farmers, who until then had carried the stones on carts in the winter months and thus had another source of income. Here at this point the Pfinz and the Floßgraben forked, the path of which today roughly corresponds to the corrected Pfinz. If you look along the river, you can see the raft ditch bridge, which has been transformed over time from wood to stone to concrete.
