Taking the route designed by Cycling UK, along with some brave friends, we headed down to Cornwall in February and decided to tackle to the West Kernow Way on short travel XC mountain bikes. We swapped out some sections of road, added in some extra bridleways and cut out some of the road where we didn't feel it was worth the extra up's and downs which Cornish roads inevitably provide! The route is challenging and beautiful. Bad weather meant a lot of the bridleways were pretty boggy in February. May would be a good time to attempt it. A lot of the roads a narrow and in the height of summer would be clogged up with tourists, making it hard to pass and keep riding momentum. Gravel bike Vs MTB? Actually, despite the amount of road, I'd still choose an MTB for this route. Some of the off road sections were bumpy and took effort on an mtb to keep momentum - thus would required a lot more effort on a gravel bike.
